Over the past few weeks to a month, like many others, I have wondered what became of this site. I can tell you a guy named Chris in Atlanta owned and operated the site, and when he started it, he had an awesome site, even though it was a pay site. I believe the site came into existence around 2002 or 2003.
While I did not know Chris personally, I do know for many years, he put his heart and soul into the site, though good times and bad. It was great to see guys in various gear and sneakers have a place to post their work and escapades, and when bondage was tossed in with assorted gear and/or sneakers it made it even better.
For a lot of years, this site was definitely on my morning reads. There would be ten plus pages of new pictures posted daily by subscribers. It was a place where guys could meet other guys who were into the same things. I even met a few guys for some gear and bondage fun off that site. While I subscribed to this site for many years, I did let my membership go a few years back, when I was not making as much money as I was, and had to cut some expenses.
So, this brings me to what I had noticed over the past several months and some possibilities.
The daily posts and new pictures kept getting fewer, and fewer and fewer. The ten plus pages of new pictures daily were down to less than five daily, and in many days only two or three pages, so, something happened.
Did a lot of members find themselves like me, and had to cut something out of their lives because they found themselves making less money? This is possible. Unlike my blog that is a hobby, and I don't have to pay for web hosting, Gearfetish needed money to survive from subscriptions, and did fewer and fewer and fewer subscriptions drive this? That's possible.
Did a lot of members get tied of the site? Well everything does grow old, and perhaps many of the members may have lost interest because they got older. Another possibility is did many members get sick of the fakes and flakes that every site like Gearfetish seems to attract? That's possible. (On a sidebar, I have noticed the same thing on Recon, where Guys will start to talk then stop, or not even answer a message. Guess their Momma's and Daddy's never taught them any manners).
Did something bad happen to Chris who was the owner and administrator of the site. Well, let's hope not!
As you can see, the possibilities I have outlined on what happened to this site is purely conjecture on my part, but these are also some very real possibilities that are not far fetched in the least. One can't help but wonder when a subscription site that has been around so long goes "poof" overnight, with no explanation as to what happened, there will be conjecture out there surrounding this mystery. I am sure there is someone out there that knows the story.
While I have enjoyed their site for many years, I am sure, I am joined many others who are quite disappointed to see that there was no announcement that the site would be coming down. Hopefully, those who prepaid subscriptions did get money back.
Feel free to leave a comment, but they are moderated before they are posted. Also, if you have insight you want to share privately, send an e mail to asicswrestone@yahoo.com and put BONDAGE in the Subject Line.
Thanks' for reading.
I was a member of Gearfetish, also noticed how the new stuff started to slow down its a shame it was a great site.
ReplyDeleteAs I said below it closed all I know is that it was kinda revived and then they were going to scale it back. From that I read they were not going to be hosting it. Was a third party. I do not recall how long it lasted. But it was for some time maybe a year or 2 maybe 3. Here's the new gf URL: https://gearfetishx.com by the way hetrvisvmy site it is bootheat chat. URL is : hope this helps.http://bootheat.atspace.cc/public_html/index/welcome.html
DeleteWas a member, but wasn't actively into the site as I once was. Not the site's fault, but I got into a longterm relationship and found less reasons to go on. BTW - I lucked out that after I was in the relationship we figured out we both were into a lot of the same fetishes! If you find out anything more please post. thnxs
ReplyDeletetheres a new gearfetish it's called gearfetishx.com it's not the same person but the one who is doing it is great at it. its decent thanks.

The last time I was on the site he said he was upgrading the servers by punching holes and making it more faster and easier to use I miss it to loved it.
ReplyDeleteGood posting that you've written. Just before the site disappeared it moved from physical servers to Amazon Web Services, perhaps the cost of running this and bandwidth became too much, but even then its a mystery why it disappeared suddenly and without warning. It was a great site and in many ways very much better than recon.
ReplyDeleteVery many happy memories of guys who I talked with and met from the site, like to many others I really miss this site.
Seen this dunno if its run by the same guy
ReplyDeletehttp://www.gearfetish.us/cgi-bin/view.cgi?force+/prelude.htm
No, gearfetish.us was run at the same time as gearfetish.com as primarily a dating site. It shares profiles with dating sites with other genres, such as dad/son and spanking.
DeleteGearfetis.us is now having problems.
DeleteI am not sure if this is the same site, but I doubt it
ReplyDeleteI was a paying member of Gearfetish. Some time ago when my six-monthly subscription expired, and I tried to renew it, the payment went through but the site did not recognise my subscription.
ReplyDeleteI sent several admin queries through the site, over two weeks. I got no response whatsoever. I was left with no alternative than to raise a dispute with Paypal. My payment was ultimately refunded.
If this happened to others, it's no wonder the site closed down. If the site couldn't provide people who had paid with their subscription benefits, people wouldn't pay. The site was very limited for non-payers, so less and less people would use it.
I know the site administrator had some personal issues. One possiblility is that things just got too much for him to handle and he just let the site die, which would be unfortunate. At any rate, the site has disappeared and it is unclear what has happened to all the content - whether it is retrievable, or whether it has been lost forever.
Like I said, it's a shame it disappeared like it did, but I am convinced someone out there knows the full story
DeleteI was also a member, miss it greatly. Also preferred it to recon. I had many gear swaps and a few meets via GF. I'm concerned about everyone's fetish images flying around cyberspace, not cool.
ReplyDeleteHope Chris is ok, and would like to see it revived.
check out gearfetishx.com, could be a promising replacement
ReplyDeletei think this is his new site
DeleteI have a spot on tumbler and is 98% reblog gear photos (the other 2% are mine). I wondered about this site since so many of the reblogged images have a watermark or profile name from the site. I did a quick look on the domain ownership in the "whois" database. It looks like the domain agent is GF Holdings, LLC - a Georgia company. The domain is registered through May of 2020. Some other information is here: http://website.informer.com/gearfetish.com . I did some more digging on this an it seems that DNS Holdings, Inc. is the domain registrar. If I read the information correctly, Amazon is hosting the site. Here is another link for the reversewhois lookup: http://reversewhois.domaintools.com/gf-multimedia,-llc ... happy digging ...
ReplyDeleteI miss the site as well and for us true gear guys I do not believe it can grow old. As to Chris, I have no idea what made him take the site down, but a little credit where it is due - my subscription lapsed right before the site went down. I attempted to send in a renewal payment but it would not go through. I can only conclude he stopped taking payments, knowing he was taking the site down, and I appreciate him saving me the $70. I also appreciate the mention of gearfetishx.com - I am happy to support any site dedicated to use gear nuts. I also found a gearfetish.us and on FetLife there is a group called GearFetishRefugees, and there is a post there about a new group called GearFetishMen.com. I have not looked at these - just tossing the names out.
ReplyDeleteOne could say I gave my best years to this site. I spend most of my twenties waiting for minutes to pass and to load another 5pics :)
ReplyDeleteAs you can see, I did not pay subscription and probably therefore site couldn't last. However, I think it was mostly a social place for variety of like minded people and I really valued it for that.
I think it went in the wrong direction lately, though. With high prices and resource-demanding features (i.e. videos). If subscription was community-oriented (e.g. 1-2$/month) and porn was left out or at least outsourced to xtbue, I think the economics could have worked. I know I would have supported it. Of course there is a legal side of things, too, but somehow this was not an issue in the past decade. However, could be that amazon banned it from its cloud due to the content.
I hope the administrator is alright, but I am deeply sad that this site is gone and in the way it did. It was a safe harbor for lost lonely soles like us. Always providing comfort, companionship and of course sexual fulfillment. Unfortunately, even if it would be back one day, I am not sure it could make a come back or at least it would need to gain popularity and trust again.
Anyway, the domain is registered for 5 more years, so if the administrator wanted or would want it, he could always place a simple 'explonation' at least or even revive it.
I was also an original subscribed member and I had uploaded some pics of myself (oh boy I was hog back then). I am curious as to what happened to Chris so if anyone ever finds out please chime in. And thanks for blogging about it Asicswrestone you weren't the only one wondering and missing the original site.
ReplyDeleteI, too, was a member of GF and subscribed. I was saddened when the site went dark as it did, with no warning, because I had no chance to exchange contact information offline with a few people whom I had met. Being bi, I am not always accepted by the gay community, but there were guys on GF who were great to chat with over the years, and I respected their privacy and we connected via the site. I've been on other sites that went dark, but at least there was warning. I still miss some of the GF guys I met, and I've not found any on the other sites mentioned. Well, gearfetish.us doesn't even send me a confirmation email, so I cannot get the profile active. Very frustrating, and while I know there were problems with GF's admin, the way the site just went dark wasn't fair to the subscribed members, to whom an email should have been sent to notify us a couple of days in advance. Oh well, I guess the admin stopped caring for whatever reason, but there are guys who used to connect there, and a little part of the world being closer, i.e., finding guys with similar interests, went away. Sad that a site dedicated to progress and bridging the distance between individuals caused a greater sense of isolation when it went down, at least it did for me.
ReplyDeleteI was a paying member of GF for years. I regret that GF disappeared without any warning. My guess is that there were less and less paying members. Loads of guys probably just used the site to watch pics of guys in gear, not to socialize or get in touch with other gear fetishists. Also GF missed the mobile curve, while Recon or PlanetRomeo developed mobile apps. Plus, to simply watch hot pics, now we have Tumblr that provides endless pages with pics of guys in gear; so maybe such facilities killed GF. Besides, as far as I know, GF was not supported by ads, only by member fees. So certainly the owners gave up.
ReplyDeleteI have been a member of GearFetish officially since 2003. But that was after I lost my password to my first account in 2002. I have been there from the beginning when it was only a few thousand members. It's been a long time. I've became friends with a lot of members but unfortunately none of them wanted to become friends outside of GearFetish and most of them never uploaded newer photos of themselves in any year and always remained with one or a few photos. I remember the last time I logged in I had about 71,000 views some six months ago. But anyways over time what made me leave was that the site just got way too boring for me and I stopped uploading photos for several years as my life gotten busier. As far as the fetishes and gears goes I've practically lived out all my fetishes with certain gears and had way too much fun in them that I've gotten completely bored of it and didn't care for any of it anymore. I've donated my gears, sold my gears and stopped buying new stuff as I gotten older and grew out of these curious fetishes that I've lived it all out. During the time I remember paying for the subscription services but it was more of supporting Chris and his site but after time I didn't care for the site anymore and needed the money to spend on other things. I remember talking to Chris many times in the past but as the site grew Chris simple ignored my messages Unfortunately he was too busy with new friends than his old friends. That's too bad that GearFetish gotten closed down. Oh well.... Most of the members or my so-called friends on there were mostly fakes in real life since they won't be friends outside of that site. So that killed my mood with fake me,people... That's why I left and never came back even though I was there since 2002.
ReplyDeleteHey Guys
ReplyDeleteChris is OKAY but had some serious promblems in his Private life. Then he became a titleholder and coukdnt keep up the Site. Its correct that he changed to Amazone, EXCACTLY like Tribe. net did, but as for Tribe.net, it doesnt work out either and closed down . Also Chris DID warn about the close down but many of you were problably busy elsewhere to read the Messages on the Site Board Info that WAS GIVEN...!!
It is sad yes..because it was the BEST fetish site and also won several Nominations for beeing so !!! Let it rest in Peace, and move on, Guys !
Thanks for the info, glad to know Chris is okay. Too bad about the site though.
DeleteGood riddance! I called out a guy on there that was playing me and other people. He actually got one of the moderators to investigate and find out who I really was. I nearly got kicked off the site.
ReplyDeleteI loved that site like so many other guys...it was a part of our lives and a real friendship site, not just some sex site...we talked about our real lives in the chat, and we knew about each others lives for years...I spent many a fum New Years Eve nights there with my buddies from all over the World...it was crappy how it ended...They could have found a buyer who would have kept it going...I will never just "get over it" or "just move on"...there was nothing ever like GF to so many guys whose only connection to other guys was on that site. It was terrible the way we were just let go. I miss you guys very very much, my buddies on GF...
ReplyDeleteI found GEARFETISH in 2014 and started posting self-pics and meeting guys through the site with similar fetishes. I have a couple good friends now from that site. Unlike the commentator's experience, I would increase the number of posts -- both posting photos and contacting others. It was a well-found home for a guy who had a gear fetish.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to contribute as I made extensive use of the site and considered it "my site". I'd write to Chris about contributing but never got an answer. This went on for a year. I am so sorry it went away .. fortunately I have all my orig pics that I posted but I have buds who lost their photos where the site collapsed and are upset by it.. they lost a lot.
I think the no warning is what peeves everyone.
I wish its woudl return but who knows why it stopped. I doubt it will
I was good while it lasted.
Markus
there is a new gearfetish.com its called gearfetishx.com check it its great i tthink its not the same person but as i said i think it is just as great.
ReplyDeleteDakota
I was on there until I called out a dress sock and shoe fetish guy that went by Adam/Rich for bad behavior. He talked in riddles and ran really hot and before suddenly dropping people like a hot potato. He was a big baby about it and ran crying to the administrator, who chewed me out. The site stopped functioning not long after that
ReplyDeleteI joined as a paying member on Feb. 12, 2003, probably by mailing a paper check for $25. After that, I paid $29.95 electronically roughly every year thru Feb. 15, 2015. Shortly after, the site vanished. I was probably a member before that initial payment. My name was always jimboylan.
ReplyDeleteOn June 12, 2013, I made an extra electronic payment or donation in response to an Email about the judgment requiring monthly payments for a fixed term to the former owner. That message included copies of the legal papers filed in Georgia. I received this in return:
Gear Fetish

Apologies for any duplication of this email. Due to the domain name, GearFetish.com, some email services bounce the delivery.

Dear GF Member,
Although I would prefer to address you individually, there has been an overwhelming response of members to help in donations.
I can’t thank you enough for your generous contribution in helping me keep GF online. No matter the amount you donated, every donation has contributed to a tremendous part in relieving a great deal of stress and pressure. Meeting a mandatory monthly settlement payment for the past 16 months has been financially challenging. Not to mention somewhat demoralizing. With your overflowing outreach, it has been quite a humbling and positive experience to be reassured that I haven’t made the mistake of fighting to keep GF.
I want you to know that am I am still committed to GF. I have a tremendous amount of work ahead of me. Rest assured, you will begin to see updates within GF.
With sincere thanks,
Chris
I just sent Christmas greeting to that address.
Probably about 2011, I got an Email from one of the helpers at GF thanking me for being a long time paying member.
